Lew Abrams, Ph. D. (HI License# 620).
Dr. Lew Abrams is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist who has been in practice for the last 10 years on Maui, serving children, teens, and adults. As an undergraduate at UC Berkeley, he did research into the effects of divorce on children. After taking several years off to travel around the world and work as a group home counselor with disturbed adolescents, he did his graduate training at UNC Chapel Hill, where he specialized in Behavioral Medicine, Couples and Family Therapy. His Masters research focused on helping children with leukemia to manage painful medical proceedures through guided imagery. His dissertation research examined the strengths of the African American extended family. He began working with Native Americans during his internship year at the Universityof Washington School of Medicine, and he received more training in family therapy with adolescents. After earning his Ph.D. in 1990, he worked for the Indian Health Service, where he deepened his understanding of chemical dependency and cross-cultural issues.
After arriving on Maui, Dr. Abrams conducted group therapy for adolencents and adults at the Molokini In Patient Psychiatric Unit at Maui Memorial Medical Center. He also provided family therapy through the Aloha House Child and Adolecent Mental Health Program. He has also provided clinical supervision to other masters and Ph. D. level psychotherapists.
Dr. Abrams is currently in private practice upcountry, where he works with couples, families, and individuals with a wide range of concerns.
